Their formation is inextricably linked to the end of cork oak life. A dead tree (or a single branch) decays, the wood decays and gradually turns to decay. When it is removed, we are left with different lengths and diameters of hollow cork tubes, which are ideal as a shelter for birds, reptiles and amphibians, rodents but also provide excellent support for orchids and other epiphytes. However, cork boughs and branches so valued by hobbyists are the result of necessary sanitary cuts made regularly on plantations. Such cuts allow to keep the forests in a proper condition, and allow us to enjoy the excellent wood that is resistant to moisture and mould, and additionally offers high aesthetic values.
