Mercury Vapor Lamps (MVL) are all-in-one type. These lamps emit warm (IR), both UVA and UVB radiation as well as pleasant visual light. All lamps have “built-in ballasts” and are ready to use in ceramic / porcelain E27 sockets without any external ballasts – in contradiction to Metal halide lamps (HID).
The RepTech MINI series of compact mercury vapor lamps should be considered to use in smaller tanks with animals of high UVB requirements. These bulbs are shorter and have a smaller diameter compared to the larger standard MVL bulbs. This does put more strain on the lamps internal parts so the life expectancy of these bulbs is 6 to 8 months of normal use. We do not recommend using the lamp with thermostats, because if controlled by temperature control devices the lamps are often turned on and off which dramatically reduce the lamp life. The glass is lightly coated for optimal output and a pleasant color spectrum.
Please remember that glass stops UV beams and therefore all UV bulbs must be inside the terrarium. Only this way UV bulb will secure proper emission of UV-A and UV-B beams to your pets. In addition, please note that due to the characteristics of the lamp – MVL bulbs must be mounted vertically downwards. Mounting at an angle shortens their life span.
important: Birds and reptiles, unlike humans, have appropriate receptors to receive the ultraviolet range. The lack of UV rays in the lighting provided to our pets is often underestimated by hobbyists because, as mentioned, we humans cannot see this light and focus on lighting in the visible light range. For reptiles, ultraviolet is not only necessary for the synthesis of vitamin D3, but allows animals to search for food, recognize the surroundings and sexual partners
